Most women especially in these parts like to experience labour and deliver vaginally (which is a good thing).
However, some women prefer a Caesarean Section (CS) which is an operation that brings out the baby though the lower belly.
Although this has it’s risks and benefits as with any other decision we make in life.
A caesarean section might be an excellent choice especially when is it recommended by a qualified medical practitioner.
Some persons are of the opinion that vaginal delivery is like a rite of passage that every woman should go through but this is not true especially when we want to place the health of the expectant mother and child as top priority.
There are a myriad of conditions in which vaginal delivery becomes life threatening to either the mother, baby, or both! Thus, making CS the one safe means of delivery that ensures the safety of both mother and child.
Here are a few examples of such conditions:
Wrong positioning of unborn baby
During normal delivery, the baby’s head is to be at lower part of the abdomen in preparation of childbirth. However, in certain situations different parts of the unborn baby appear close to the birth canal.
For instance, the buttocks or feet of the baby appears closest to the birth canal, making it almost impossible for normal vaginal delivery.
In some situations, the emerging part of the baby’s body is an arm or a leg making it impossible for a safe vaginal delivery hence an emergency CS is usually required.
Other times as well the descent of the baby through the birth canal is difficult because the diameter of the part of the head may be too big to safely fit through the birth canal.
These are only a few of the many possible of ways a baby can be wrongly positioned requiring CS!!!
Pregnancy beyond due date:
It is a pregnancy that has extended to or is beyond 42 weeks (the estimated date of delivery (EDD) plus 14 day).
In this situation there is difficulty in labour progression thus keeping the foetus longer in the uterus than is necessary.
This poses serious risk to the life of both mother and foetus and CS is usually recommended
Unsuitable size of pelvis:
This exists when the capacity of the pelvis is inadequate to allow the foetus to come out through the birth canal.
This may be due to a small cervix (birth canal), large foetus, or unfavourable orientation of the foetus.
It could also be a combination of these factors making vaginal delivery difficult and risky.
Increased Blood pressure or Convulsion:
When there is a sustained blood pressure increase in pregnancy (BP> 140/90mmHg) on two occasions with protein in urine coupled with convulsion. CS is usually the delivery mode.
The above is by no means exhaustive, but they are the most common of the factors that predisposes a woman to deliver via Caesarean section.
As earlier mentioned, Caesarean section is a medical procedure that ensures safety of both mother and foetus.
No qualified medical practitioner will recommend CS to you when it isn’t indicated and even at that the pregnant woman still has the final say on what she wants.
Sadly many educated pregnant women still visit TBA (traditional birth attendants) with the hope of avoiding CS when it has been considered necessary.
At the end they report back to the hospital when it’s almost too late resulting in avoidable deaths!!!!
